Guide Dog Fundamentals

All reputable guide dog programs require participants to have demonstrated orientation and mobility proficiency before assigning a dog. While The Sight Center does not train or provide guide dogs, our certified Orientation & Mobility (O&M) specialists teach the skills needed for a successful guide dog partnership.

Orientation & Mobility  instruction provides critical skills that create a foundation for the independence, and freedom of mobility that comes with working a guide dog. This instruction  is also essential to preparing people who are visually impaired for a successful guide dog partnership.

Prior to getting a guide dog, a person should have participated in a formal Orientation & Mobility  program, like that offered by The Sight Center. Guide dog programs will typically contact the applicant’s O&M instructor for verification of skills.
