Empowering Blind Voters During Pandemic

The Sight Center Steps Forward to Support and Transport for 2020 Elections

Empowering Blind Voters imageThe new voting options resulting from the coronavirus have introduced additional complexity for voters who are blind or visually impaired. With election day quickly approaching, The Sight Center of Northwest Ohio is offering its services to area sight-impaired voters who are having difficulty navigating the new options or securing transportation to polling sites.

The Tuesday and Thursday prior to Election Day (October 27 & 29), staff and volunteers from The Sight Center will be available to assist with ballot completion and transportation to early voting sites for clients and others who live with permanent vision loss. Interested voters should contact The Sight Center in advance to request assistance as staff and volunteers are limited.

According to The Sight Center’s Executive Director Stacey Butts, the organization is responding to recent calls from clients who are more committed than ever to have their voice represented. “Our mission calls us to empower independence for people who are blind or visually impaired” said Ms. Butts, adding “This is just another way we’re doing that during this unusual year.”

Voters utilizing the service are required to abide by The Sight Center’s COVID-19 policies and procedures, which include appropriate face coverings, temperature checks, health screening questionnaires, hand sanitizing and appropriate social distancing.
